Columbia University Medical Center

School of Nursing, New Nursing School Design

New York, NY

Anchoring the east end of Columbia University Medical Center, the new 7-story building for the Columbia University School of Nursing (CUSON) is configured to encourage collaboration, interaction, and clinical excellence. The North and East facades of the building are dedicated to faculty offices, conference rooms, and break-out spaces. The core houses clinical simulation labs, research centers, computer labs, and flexible office spaces for PhD candidates and visiting faculty. A rooftop terrace provides additional opportunity for alumni, community and medical center partners, students, faculty, and staff to meet, unwind, and share while taking in spectacular views of upper Manhattan and beyond.

A state-of-the-art simulation learning laboratory prepares students for real-world complexities when caring for patients in a variety of clinical settings. The simulation center occupies nearly two floors of the new building, and is equipped with a variety of model healthcare settings, such as a patient’s hospital room, an outpatient exam room, a critical care unit, operating room, and an emergency department. It is also equipped with video cameras and audio equipment so instructors can play back the sequence of events and discuss with their students the real-time consequences of both action and non-action.

AKF provided MEP/FP and Audio Visual design, COMcheck calculations, and energy modeling services for this 70,000 SF LEED® Gold certified building. The new building features abundant natural light and ample air-flow and climate control.
